No, that is not Amandla (thank goodness). That is a charter boat that we met while waiting for a weather window to head to Suwarrow.

The crew of four had been sailing in mild conditions within the reef when the mast just simply gave up.  Rigging failure.  Luckily no one was hurt.

Getting a Tow

The charter company arrived a few hours later to give the crew a tow back to the charter base.

For independent cruisers, such a situation is typically a bit more dire and certainly one that we hope we never have to face on Amandla.

You can read here about the challenges faced by our friends on Voilier Coccinelle when they demasted just miles off the coast of Alaska in July after a long passage from Hawaii.  May they find their wings again soon!

Great to hear from you Bill! Glad that you enjoyed the pictures. I didn’t manage to improve my French language skills much in Polynesia so I thank goodness for Google translate 🙂
