Reaching back into my archives for this mural from Christchurch. The original artwork was recreated outdoors for the Faces From The Collection Exhibition after the city was dramatically changed by the 2011 earthquake.
Yesterday, the crew of Amandla started our journey northward from Gulf Harbor. On the first day out, we were treated to pouring rain and gale force winds, but safely tucked into Christian Bay overnight.
We are now sailing to Marsden Cove, Whangarei in sunny (albeit cold) conditions and lighter winds.
Tomorrow, we will check out of New Zealand and sail toward Fiji via Minerva Reef.
Once we leave the shores of New Zealand, we will be off-grid for 2+ weeks but will be sending periodic position updates via satellite phone along the way. You can follow our updates on Farkwar or on Twitter .
I will miss many things about New Zealand. The Captain says he will miss our used Honda Odyessy and the large portion of his liver that he had resected here at the end of March.
We are both looking forward to warmer climates.

I was delighted to be asked by one of my favorite photographers, Lucile de Godoy from Bridging Lacunas, to post photos of the four classical elements: Water, Earth, Fire and Air.
“It is believed that they reflect the simplest essential parts and principles of which anything can consist, or upon which the constitution and fundamental powers of everything are based.”
I decided to take a trip through the archives for this post, combining images of New Zealand (where I’ve been living since November) and tropical island life (where I will be heading back to in a few short weeks).
Now it is my turn to nominate four bloggers to participate, but instead, I will once again borrow the eloquent words of Michelle Hill…
‘I know that many of my fellow bloggers are regularly asked to participate in these challenges, so rather than nominate an individual, I’m making an offer to any of you who are interested to take up the challenge’.
Whether you take up the challenge or not, you will totally want to check out Lucile’s amazing images for this challenge here.
